Laminate

Laminate countertops are not what they used to be. Today’s laminates benefit from state-of-the-art technologies that incorporate coated film images adhered to a compressed wood core. These images can simulate any number of natural materials—including granite! New fabrication techniques allow for edge details that can be squared, beveled or rounded. Laminates have earned a second look and have become “the value-engineered product” of the decade. They offer fair to good durability, they are easy to clean and resist staining, and of all counter material choices, they are the least expensive. Seams will show, but many of the new materials are available in larger widths, that reduce the seams needed. Laminates can scratch, so abrasive cleaners need to be avoided. Also hot pots and cutting directly on the surface can damage laminates if not protected.
